Σήμερα οι ορθόδοξοι αρχιερείς φέρουν αμφίεση παρόμοια μ’ εκείνη του βυζαντινού αυτοκράτορα· ένα τυπολογικό ιδίωμα που διατηρείται προκειμένου να επισημανθεί η νοητή συνέχεια της Χριστιανικής Αυτοκρατορίας της Ανατολής. Παρότι ο τύπος εμμένει, η ουσία επιλανθάνεται. Και τούτο δεν έχει να κάνει αποκλειστικά με τη θεολογία αλλά και με την «κοσμοθεωρία» της αυτοκρατορίας. Το Βυζάντιο ήταν πολυεθνικό και «υπερεθνικό» σε όλες τις κοινωνικές βαθμίδες. Αφομοίωνε και ενέτασσε λαούς όχι με εθνολογικούς αλλά με πολιτιστικούς όρους. Και οι «αλλοεθνείς» έφθαναν έως το ύπατο αξίωμα. Ο αρμενικής καταγωγής Ηράκλειος ήταν αυτός που θέσπισε ως επίσημη γλώσσα της αυτοκρατορίας την ελληνική. Τη δυναστεία του Ηρακλείου διαδέχθηκε η συριακή δυναστεία των Ισαύρων, για ν’ ακολουθήσουν οι Φρύγες του Αμορίου. Έναντι, λοιπόν, ποιας πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς ή παράδοσης μπορεί ένας ιεράρχης να ιδεολογικοποιεί τον ρατσισμό, να προπηλακίζει τους μετανάστες ως ανεπιθύμητους, να μιλάει για εθνική καθαρότητα;

Andreas of Caesarea

Josef Schmid,
Der Apokalypse-Kommentar des Andreas von Kaisareia,
Karl Zink Verlag Munchen, 1955,
p./σ. 186.

The seventh "king" or âge, had not yet come at the time of the Apocalypse, nor at the time of Hippolytus, but Andrew believes himself to be living in that âge. He is about to explain why the earth did not end when it had completed 6,000 years, as Hippolytus believed it would. Andrew has concluded that the year 6,000 is the beginning of the seventh âge, the final "day," which Hippolytus had conceived of as the afterlife. Andrew sees this verse as indicating yet another earthly âge beyond the sixth, but it will probably not last very long since "it must remain a little while." Andrew does not accept Hippolytus' interprétation of the "kings" as periods of one thousand years but instead believes they represent a succession of kingdoms, each of which had world-wide domination, with each individual king representing the entire period of domination of that kingdom. Hippolytus lived in the sixth âge, because he lived prior to Constantine, who inaugurated the seventh kingdom and the reign of "Christ-loving kings."

τον αντιρατσιστικό νόμο;

Nationalistic school force & compulsion:
A way for the nation's unity? /

Τρόπος για την ενότητα του έθνους;

Perhaps the most famous instance of incumbent justices changing their mind on a high-profile issue occurred in the 1940s. The question was whether school children with religious objections to pledging allegiance to the flag could be required to do so, on pain of expulsion from school. Jehovah’s Witnesses, for whom saluting the flag is unacceptable, challenged the requirement as a violation of the First Amendment right to free exercise of religion. In 1940, the court ruled in Minersville School District v. Gobitis that the First Amendment did not prevent public school districts from expelling the Jehovah’s Witness children. The vote was 8 to 1, with only Chief Justice Harlan F. Stone dissenting.

The reaction by a country caught up in wartime patriotic fervor appalled the justices. Taking the Supreme Court’s decision as proof that Jehovah’s Witnesses were not good citizens, mobs attacked and burned the Witnesses’ places of worship. Members of the faith were fired from their jobs and some 2,000 Jehovah’s Witness children were expelled from school. When another case reached the court after only three years, three justices who had been in the earlier majority changed their votes. With the addition of two new justices to the court, the vote to affirm the religious rights of the Jehovah’s Witnesses was 6 to 3. The decision, West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, with a majority opinion by the recently appointed Robert H. Jackson, remains a star in the First Amendment firmament.

Two of the three justices who changed their minds, Hugo L. Black and William O. Douglas, explained themselves in a concurring opinion. “Neither our domestic tranquility in peace nor our martial effort in war depend on compelling little children to participate in a ceremony which ends in nothing for them but a fear of spiritual condemnation,” the two wrote. The third justice to change his mind was Frank Murphy. It was in “freedom and the example of persuasion,” Justice Murphy wrote, “not in force and compulsion, that the real unity of America lies.”

The "Lord" meaning Jehovah
in the Letter of James /

In contrast to the relatively little explicit attention paid to Jesus, James has a rich set of statements concerning God. The term θεός occurs fifteen times (1:1, 5, 13, 20, 27; 2:5, 19, 23 (2); 3:9; 4:4(2), 6, 7, 8). James places the term “Father” (πατήρ) in apposition to θεός in 1:17, 27, and 3:9. Notably, he never calls God “Father of Jesus Christ.” In addition to θεός, at least some of James’s references to “Lord” (κύριος) refer to God rather than to Jesus (see 1:7; 3:9; 4:10, 15; 5:4, 11). In 108 verses, then, James mentions God some twenty-four times. This is properly designated a theocentric composition.

(James 1:7, NWT) In fact, let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from Jehovah;
(James 3:9) With it we bless Jehovah, even [the] Father, and yet with it we curse men who have come into existence “in the likeness of God.”
(James 4:10) Humble yourselves in the eyes of Jehovah, and he will exalt YOU.
(James 4:15) Instead, YOU ought to say: “If Jehovah wills, we shall live and also do this or that.”
(James 5:4) Look! The wages due the workers who harvested YOUR fields but which are held up by YOU, keep crying out, and the calls for help on the part of the reapers have entered into the ears of Jehovah of armies.
(James 5:11) Look! We pronounce happy those who have endured. YOU have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome Jehovah gave, that Jehovah is very tender in affection and merciful.

Thomas Bartholin (1616–1680)
on blood transfusions
& the Apostolic decree
about blood /

Transfusion surgery by novices has exceeded limits in recent years, since it has infused through an opened vein into the heart of a sick man not only invigorating liquids, but warm blood of animals or [blood] from one man into another . . . Indeed the learned man Elsholtz (in chap. 7 of the Clysmatica Nova [New Clyster]) pleads as an excuse that the Apostolic decree must in fact be understood with regard to the eating of blood done through the mouth, not at all with regard to infusion by the veins, but either manner of taking [blood] accords with one and the same purpose, that by this blood a sick body be nourished or restored [to health].

I have seen persons holding a cup below the wound of a man recently slaughtered, and drinking a draught of the blood!
O the present, the mighty necessity, which compels one to remedy the evil by such a wicked abomination! And whether even they recovered by this means no one could tell me for certain. There is another story of the liver of a man having been eaten. However, I leave these things to be described by those who would bear to try such means.

The Morning Prayer
in Greek Kindergartens
as a Field of Exercising Multiculturalism /

Morning prayer at a Greek elementary school

The morning prayer in all Greek schools is a custom and an obligation for the Greek teachers and is held everyday in all schools of the country. Students can be excepted from the prayer after a request of their parents or guardians. This option satisfies the constitutional claim.

A current trued for Greek educational policy is to associate religion with cultural events following (Efstathiou et al., 2008). Coulby’s (2008) position according which religious teaching can be more effective through cultural events than explicit teaching.

It can be said that the full exercise of social and cultural rights and the religious freedom of other religious groups such as Catholic Christians or Jehovah’s Witnesses, is not enough provided. Religion is an in strict part of the Greek culture and the collective morning prayer is a part of this reality. Only a small part of the Greek society seems to support the view for a division between church and state.

Andrei Rublev's,
the Holy Trinity icon (1410) /

The Holy Trinity (1410)

The Holy Trinity
(1577)

Andrei Rublev's Trinity Icon
Christopher Evan Longhurst

Russian Orthodox Trinitarian theology in its most famous artistic expression

The doctrine of the Holy Trinity is commonly expressed in Christian art, particularly in the Western tradition, as God the Father with a grey beard, Jesus the Son in his bosom and a dove hovering overhead. El Greco's mannerist version [1577, Prado Museum, Spain] is among the finest examples. Besides this figurative personification there is a complex theology that renders the Trinity in a rare iconography seen superlatively in Andrei Rublev's icon Trinity [c. 1400 Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow]. In addition to being one of the highest achievements of Russian art, Rublev's icon — also known as "Old Testament Trinity"— portrays a profound theological meaning of the unity of Persons in the Trinity along with the spiritual nature of God's Divine Essence by depicting the Triune God as simply three angels.

Many outside the Russian Orthodox tradition wonder what it is about this image that represents the Trinity. Rublev's subject matter is certainly uncharacteristic of Western Trinity representations. Rather than depicting the classic Father, Son and Holy Spirit breakdown as old bearded man, Jesus and the dove, Rublev's Trinity displays a rare arrangement of three angels symbolizing a solemn visual Trinitarian theology that conforms to the Russian Orthodox tradition. The Russian Orthodox Church never fully resolved the iconoclastic controversy until 1667. Although debates regarding the legitimacy of representing God in art were more or less settled by the Second Council of Nicaea (787), the Russian Orthodox still found portraying the Father as problematic. Although the Council declared that since the Son became incarnate, depicting Jesus was allowed, the Russian situation regarding the Father remained unclear due to other underlying theological issues. Debates continued among the Orthodox Churches and divergent views emerged with the Coptics prohibiting figurative portrayals of the Father though allowing His conceptual image through abstract illustration. The Syrians, Armenians and Indians followed suit while the Ethiopians allowed the depiction of the Holy Trinity as three distinct Persons. Figurative representation of the Father remained controversial among the Russians until after nearly nine hundred years of debates the Great Synod of Moscow (1667) finally made up the Russians' minds and outlawed all illustrations of the Father in human form. The Synod held that since only God the Son assumed visible human form, the rationale behind sanctioning icons would be limited to depicting figuratively the Second Person of the Trinity only:

It is most absurd and improper to depict in icons God the Father with a grey beard and the Only-Begotten Son in His bosom with a dove between them, because no-one has seen the Father according to His Divinity, and the Father has no flesh [...] and the Holy Spirit is not in essence a dove, but in essence God. (2 § 44)

The Russian Fathers proclaimed: "Those who have intelligence will not depict the Holy Spirit in the likeness of a dove, for on Mount Tabor, He appeared as a cloud and, at another time, in other ways" (ibid.).

The Synod stressed that the function of all sacred art would be spiritual mediation through holy and venerated images created only under divine inspiration. Consequently the Russians chose to focus on the so-called "Old Testament Trinity" as the standard representation of the Triune God. Rublev's Trinity icon is a product of this tradition and it became the preferred style replacing all anthropomorphic artistic representations of the Trinity common in Russia at that time.

Rublev's masterpiece attests to the Russian Synod's position by portraying three quasi-identical angels at Abraham's house by the oak of Mamre (cf. Gen 18:1-15). The theological finesse of the work draws attention to the unity of the three Divine Persons in One God. By using the same figures to represent each Divine Person Rublev has emphasized their equality while symbolizing the tri-unity of all three Persons and underscoring the undifferentiated Divine Essence. He has effectively illustrated that God is One Divine Being comprising Three Divine Persons — not one Person with three attributes.

The similitude among the angels recalls the doctrine of the Trinitarian Perichoresis which aids in understanding the Christian notion of three Persons in one another. This circumincession as the Latin Fathers call it, augments the Church's teaching on the notion of Divine Unity and Oneness. In fact, the fundamental basis of the Trinitarian Perichoresis is that there is one God Who is altogether Father, Son and Holy Spirit while distinctions between the Persons and the Divine Essence exist only virtually — a doctrine in the foreground of the Christian faith.

The suitability of Rublev's image for the Russian Orthodox is heightened by the fact that angels are spiritual substances. The entire iconoclastic controversy revolved around God's Divine Nature as an uncreated non-corporeal substance, hence non-representable.

Given its profound theological significances Rublev's Trinity is not only an unsurpassed work of Russian iconography, it is also a first-class figurative "theology of the Trinity". It instructs the faithful and nonbelievers alike that the revelation of the triune God is one of unity in Divine Essence and trinity in Divine Personhood. Given its rich theological symbolism it is not surprising that the Roman Church has established this image as the model for explaining Trinitarian doctrine and inspiring devotion towards the mystery of the inner life of God.

The depiction of the Trinity as three identical figures remains rare in Christian art given that theology ascribes to each Divine Person distinct attributes, namely, to the Father, creation; to the Son, redemption, and to the Holy Spirit, sanctification. Rublev's icon is, however, more precise in expressing the concept of a God who is in Essence one and in Persons three. It illustrates the Church's term for the numerical Unity of God's Essence — (cf. Nicaea I, 325 AD) which seeks to explain the doctrine of the Trinity and reaffirm the principle of the Father and Son as "of one being" (or consubstantialem). This is the essence of Trinitarian theology and also the mystery of the internal life of God.

While the representation of God the Father remains a sensitive issue in the art of Eastern Orthodoxy, Rublev's icon is the unparalleled expression of Trinitarian theology for all Christian Churches throughout the world. It is, in fact, the axial image of Christian unity in theology concerning the doctrine of the Holy Trinity and this is what the Church's feast of 3 June seeks to commemorate.

Chapel of San Brizio, Duomo, Orvieto.

What is the identity
of the “spirits in prison”
of 1 Peter 3:19, 20? /

των εδ. 1 Πέτρου 3:19, 20;

(28NA)

19in which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison, 20which aforetime were disobedient, when the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. (ERV)

(ΜΝΚ)

— 1 Peter / 1 Πέτρου 3:19, 20.

The identification of the πνεύμασιν, along with the timing and purpose of the proclamation to them, are key interpretative issues in this difficult passage. Dalton (1989, 25–66) summarizes the history of interpretation, identifying the three major views: (1) The spirits are souls of human beings who died during the days of Noah to whom Christ made proclamation during the period between his death and resurrection in the realm of the dead, either (a) to convert them, (b) to announce good news to those who had been converted before their death, or (c) to condemn them; (2) The spirits are sinful human beings from the days of Noah to whom, when they were alive, the preincarnate Christ made proclamation through the person of Noah; or (3) The spirits are demonic spirits to whom Christ proclaimed his victory either (a) between his death and resurrection, or (b) during his ascension to heaven. Option (3b), argued persuasively by Dalton (1989), has approached the status of a near consensus among recent commentators and is the view also adopted here. Πνεῦμα is seldom used in the plural of human spirits, and never so without additional modification (Heb 12:23; perhaps also 1 Cor 14:32; Rev 22:6). Rather, the over thirty plural uses of πνεῦμα in the NT typically refer to angelic (usually demonic) beings (e.g., Matt 8:16; 12:45; Luke 10:20). An especially helpful starting point to this challenging text is the essay by France. For a summary of the history of interpretation and recent scholarly literature, see further Dubis (2006, 220–21).

38And so those soldiers, having seen, awakened the centurion and the elders (for they too were present, safeguarding). 39And while they were relating what they had seen, again they see three males who have come out from they sepulcher, with the two supporting the other one, and a cross following them, 40and the head of the two reaching unto heaven, but that of the one being led out by a hand by them going beyond the heavens. 41And they were hearing a voice from the heavens saying, 'Have you made proclamation to the fallen-asleep?' 42And an obeisance was heard from the cross, 'Yes.'

Who is “the true God”? /

Ο C. H. Dodd
Ποιος είναι «ὁ ἀληθινὸς θεὸς»;

This, he adds, is the real God. In strict grammar, the word 'this' should refer to the last person named. Some commentators accordingly take the sentence we are considering to mean, 'This Person, namely Jesus Christ, is the real God.' It is more likely that the word 'this' has a wider and vaguer reference. The writer is gathering together in his mind all that he has been saying about God--how He is light, and love, how He is revealed as the Father through His Son Jesus Christ; how He is faithful and just to forgive our sins; how He remains in us--and this, he adds, is the real God, the one eternal Reality of which the mystics talk, though they do not know Him as He is known through Christ. And this, he also adds (meaning now the knowledge of the Real God of which he has just spoken) is eternal life. For illustration of this we need only recall John xvii. 3: This is life eternal, that they know Thee, the only real God, and Him whom Thou hast sent, even Jesus Christ. But it is also worth while to recall that the maxim that eternal life comes by knowledge of God, or of the Real, was a religious commonplace of the time. The new thing distinctive of Christianity is the revelation of God in a human life, with all that that involves.

Footnote on Luke 23:43: / Fußnote zu Lukas 23:43: / Υποσημείωση στο εδ.

The punctuation presently used in this verse is undoubtedly false and contradictory to the entire way of thinking of Christ and the evildoer. [...] Christ (the Messiah) certainly did not understand paradise to be a subdivision of the realm of the dead, but rather the restoration of a paradise on earth, that is the Messianic kingdom.
