Before the hills in order stood:
the beginning of the geology of time in England
JOHN G. C. M. FULLER
2 Oak Tree Close, Rodmell Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN2 5SS, UK

Abstract: That order should govern the nature of the world is an idea not confined to England, though the history of science in this country demonstrates again and again that a conception of Divine Order lay at its heart. To people of earlier days, want of order implied confusion, displacement, derangement, time out of joint, even the presence of malevolent power - 'when the planets in evil mixture to disorder wander'. The divine scheme revealed by scripture was a frame and support for Earth science. It told an indisputable story of an ordered beginning, a diluvial reordering, and a future end in dissolution. It was a story backed by secular law, and no thinking person could have been unaware of it. Yet 'when' and 'how' were legitimate questions, answered in detail by hexaemeron writers. It is an educational curiosity in England that a particular Biblical chronology drawn up in 1650 accompanied scriptures printed for use in schools until 1885 - a matter of consequence to the history of all geological thought in this country.

Linguistic Dating of Biblical Texts /

«Some of us may be quite content to leave all the biblical books in the postexilic period. However, for others of us we will now argue that the logic of the argument that leads to this conclusion is false because many of the presuppositions of the chronological approach are mistaken. [...] We can now see that the question that needs to be asked is: what are we actually dating? If biblical books were written and rewritten over the generations in the BCE period, then the question of the “original date” when a biblical book was composed is revealed to be anachronistic and irrelevant. The book as a whole was composed over a long period of time. Beyond this there are various things we may try to date such as when do we think the core form of the book came into being or what is the date of the current form of the text we are studying? We can see that these are two separate questions and that we must be very cautious about using the features of the current texts to date a presumed original composition.»

«Concerning the biblical chronology of the creation of the world, «there were in fact two main groups of dates. One, the earlier, had the origin of the world round about 5500 BC; the other, the later, had it just before 4000 BC or, more commonly, just after, around 3900 plus. The higher date was the eastern figure, and it was so because the eastern current of Christianity followed the figures of the Septuagint or Greek Old Testament, which had higher figures in Genesis 5 and 11; the lower was widespread in the west, especially after the Vulgate of St Jerome familiarized western Christianity with the figures derived from the standard Hebrew text itself».
