«Η ανατολική εκκλησία επίσης αρχικά αποδέχτηκε τη Γραφή στα Σλαβονικά (μολονότι έχουμε μόνο τη μαρτυρία του Βίου του Αγ. Μεθοδίου που εκτείνεται σε αυτό το ζήτημα). Αλλά σύντομα και αυτή έγινε καχύποπτη ως προς την εγκυρότητα της σλαβονικής, διότι οι αιρετικοί Βογόμιλοι ήταν σθεναροί υποστηρικτές της Βίβλου στην καθομιλουμένη. Μπορούμε να θεωρήσουμε την μακροχρόνια τάση για εξελληνισμό των σλαβονικών μεταφράσεων της Βίβλου ως την ορθόδοξη απάντηση –μεταξύ αμφότερων των Σλάβων και των Βυζαντινών– στην προώθηση της καθομιλουμένης από τα αιρετικά κινήματα εν γένει. Διότι απομακρύνοντας ακόμη περισσότερο τη σλαβονική Γραφή από τη ζωντανή γλώσσα και φέρνοντάς την σε μεγαλύτερη ομοιομορφία με την ελληνική, οι Ορθόδοξες εκκλησιαστικές αρχές επιζητούσαν όχι μόνο να διασφαλίσουν την ακρίβεια της σλαβονικής μετάφρασης αλλά επίσης –πιθανώς όχι συνειδητά αλλά σίγουρα αποτελεσματικά– να εμποδίσουν την πρόσβαση των λαϊκών στα βιβλικά κείμενα».

Of the wise among us, some consider the Holy Ghost an influence [“divine power in action,” W. Barclay], others a creature, others God himself, and again others know not which way to decide, from reverence, as they say, for the Holy Scripture, which declares nothing exact in the case.
