4

Many witnesses, including the Andreas tradition, have a parenthetical phrase at the beginning of this verse, such as καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ τῶν νεκρῶν οὐκ ἔζησαν ἄχρι τελεσθῇ τὰ χίλια ἔτη (‘And the rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended’; [02] 254 1006 [1611] 1637 etc.). This is absent from Codex Sinaiticus and the Koine text (01 2053 etc.). It would be very easy for the longer text to have been omitted through eyeskip from the preceding χίλια ἔτη (‘a thousand years’) and the phrase is included in the previous hand editions as well as the SBLGNT and THGNT. Nevertheless, the variety of forms in which it is found and its clarificatory content, as well as the smoother reading which results from its absence, led the ECM editors to consider it as a later gloss formed of text from the two preceding verses (see the long discussion in the ECM Revelation Textual Commentary). It may be noted that all Greek manuscripts here and at Rev. 20:3 read ἄχρι (‘until’): the appearance of ἕως (‘until’) in the Textus Receptus is a synonym consistent with a retranslation from the Latin by Erasmus (cf. Rev. 1:4, 6:1, 21:6 etc.).

Codex Sinaiticus

Greek New Testament (UBS6): Sixth Revised Edition

After more than ten years of intensive preparation, a new edition of the UBS Greek New Testament (6th edition) is now available. It offers the most up-to-date Greek text with the textual changes from the Editio Critica Maior volumes on the Acts of the Apostles (2017), the Gospel of Mark (2021), and Revelation (2024). The text differs from the text of the 5th edition in more than 100 places and is identical to that of the 29th edition of the Novum Testamentum Graece (NA29), which is in preparation for 2026.

The apparatus includes clearly structured entries on all major variants of the text. The selection of the passages was guided by the question of their relevance for translation and interpretation. The importance of the so-called Textus Receptus has also been given greater consideration compared to previous editions. The selection of manuscripts was focused on the most important witnesses, which are now supplemented by new manuscripts (papyri 128 to 141).

This sixth edition begins with an accessible introduction in English and is edited by an international and interdenominational committee, which is also responsible for NA29 and works closely with the Institute for New Testament Textual Research: Holger Strutwolf, Hugh Houghton, Christos Karakolis, David Parker, Stephen Pisano, David Trobisch, and Klaus Wacht.

Jan Joosten:

‘Conjectural emendations’
revisited /

Οι "εικασιακές κειμενικές διορθώσεις"
επαναθεωρούμενες

Textual criticism, according to one famous definition, is ‘the science of discovering error in texts and the art of removing it.’ The procedure here consists of two steps, the first of which is qualified as a science, the second as art: identifying errors in a transmitted text is deemed a more dependable, more ‘scientific’, practice than that of correcting the reading, which will always retain some ‘artistic’ quality. The definition seems eminently logical and certainly reflects a very broad and long experience in the editing of texts.

In textual criticism of the Hebrew Bible, however, we do not usually start out by scanning the received text for errors only thereafter to reflect upon possible solutions. Our first operation is to compare the received Hebrew text with other witnesses: Qumran fragments, the Septuagint, other versions, and in the Pentateuch also the Samaritan text. This means that, as textual critics, we usually come to the ‘error’ in the text after having already encountered possible ‘ways to remove it’.

One could object that the comparative approach is just a matter of expediency. The collation of the witnesses is a heuristic device. Once a divergence has been identified as being textually based, we do search for error. Where, for instance, the Septuagint Vorlage is deemed to diverge from the MT, a decision in favor of one of the witnesses must be based inter alia on a demonstration of what went wrong in the other one. All this is true enough, as is the fact that textual corruption will usually create turbulence among the witnesses even when they preserve nothing of the original reading. Still, it would be fair to say our methods are geared toward identifying variant readings, not – as Housman has it – errors. We are thus in danger of developing a ‘blind spot’. If a corrupt reading should be attested in all our witnesses, we might never ‘discover’ it. We may still find such reading in the secondary literature. Indeed, in times bygone text-critical method was practiced in a way that more closely resembled the approach envisaged by Housman. An example will illustrate some of these dynamics.

Ο Αυγουστίνος
για τις χειρογραφικές παραφθορές
του κειμένου της ΚΔ /

Augustine
on the manuscript corruptions
of the NT text

Plurimum hic quoque adiuvat interpretum numerositas collatis codicibus inspecta atque discussa. Tantum absit falsitas; nam codicibus emendandis primitus debet invigilare sollertia eorum qui scripturas divinas nosse desiderant, ut emendatis non emendati cedant, ex uno dumtaxat interpretationis genere venientes. [...] Libros autem novi testamenti, si quid in latinis varietatibus titubat, graecis cedere oportere non dubium est, et maxime qui apud ecclesias doctiores et diligentiores reperiuntur.

In this area too it is very helpful to collect manuscripts and examine and discuss a number of translations. But inaccuracy must be excluded, for the attention of those who wish to know the divine scripture must first focus on the task of correcting the manuscripts, so that uncorrected ones give place to corrected ones, assuming that they belong to the same class of translation. [...] The Latin manuscripts of the New Testament, if there is any uncertainty in the various Latin versions, should without doubt give place to Greek ones, especially those found in the more learned and diligent churches.
