Oscar Cullmann
on the stand of the Christians
on the demands made
by a totalitarian State /

Now we understand why we hear a tone quite different here from that in Romans 13. In all other points the Johannine Apocalypse may be a book radically different from the Epistle to the Romans; but in the interpretation of the State there is no contradiction—no more than there is within the Pauline letters themselves or among the sayings of Jesus. Regarding the State's requirement of worship of Caesar's image Paul would not have spoken otherwise than the author of the Johannine Apocalypse. Moreover our present chapter contains a verse which leads us back to Romans 13. In the beginning of the chapter we discover the holy indignation at the blasphemous bearing of the State which deifies itself; yet in verse 10 we read: "If one kills with the sword, by the sword he must die." Here we are reminded of the limitation placed on resistance even to the totalitarian State. We must resist the totalitarian demand of this State, and indeed at any cost; but only within the compass of this demand. This means: positively, perseverance in our Christian preaching; negatively, perseverance in our refusal of the idolatry demanded by the State. The totalitarian demand we have to resist even to blood; but it is not our business to take the sword, to wage war as the fellowship of Christians against this State in order to destroy its existence. This is said even by the author of the Johannine Apocalypse, who describes the satanic beast so powerfully. The saying in verse 10 according to the generally admitted reading leads us back also to Jesus, to his decisive renunciation of Zealotism in Gethsemane in the face of his followers' Zealotist pattern of behavior, as we read in Matthew 26:52, "All that take the sword shall perish with the sword."

What was the thing to be grasped?/
Ποιο ήταν το αντικείμενο του αρπαγμού;

«The difficult phrase [at Philip. 2:6] which follows this declaration that Jesus was in the form of God, '(He) did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped', can also be explained only on the basis of a contrasting parallel between the Heavenly Man and Adam. Without the background of Paul's doctrine of the two Adams, either these words can scarcely be understood, or we become lost in tangential theological speculations foreign to early Christianity. In order to understand the phrase, we need only think of the promise of the serpent in Gen. 3:5: 'When you eat of it... you will be like God.' Adam, tempted by the devil, wanted to be like God. That was his sin, and as a result of it he lost his highest possession, the image of God. The Heavenly Man did not commit this 'robbery' and therefore remained faithful to divine destiny to be the image of God. This is shown precisely by the fact that he 'emptied' himself; that is, that he determined to become a man, to enter into the humanity which had lost the likeness of God.

Equality with God is thus considered 'a thing to be grasped' (res rapienda). Adam's real fall consists in the arrogance which was not satisfied with the highest task God had conferred upon his earthly image.»

άμεση σωτηρία ή ιδιαίτερη διαβεβαίωση;

Ο Menoud, Le sort des trepasses, σελ.

«Also the much-disputed words of Luke 23:45 ‘Today you will be with me in Paradise’, belong here. To be sure it is not impossible, though artificial, to understand σήμερον as modifying λέγω σοι. The statement is to be understood in the light of Luke 16:23 and of the late Jewish conception of ‘Paradise’ as the place of the blessed [Strack-Billerbeck, ad. loc.; P. Volz, Die Eschatologie der jüdischen Gemeinde im neutest. Zeitalter {2nd Edn, 1934}, p. 265]. It is certain that Luke 16:23 does not refer to resurrection of the body, and the expectation of the Parousia is in no way supplanted. Such an interpretation is also decisively rejected by W. G. Kümmel, Verheissung und Erfüllung, 2nd Edn (1953), p. 67. A certain disparity here over against Pauline theology does exist in so far as Christ Himself on the day referred to as ‘today’ has not yet risen, and therefore the foundation of the condition wherein the dead are bound up with Christ has not yet been laid. But in the last analysis the emphasis here is on the fact that the thief will be with Christ. Menoud [Le sort des trépassés, P. 45] correctly points out that Jesus’ answer must be understood in relation to the thief’s entreaty. The thief asks Jesus to remember him when He ‘comes into His kingdom’, which according to the Jewish view of the Messiah can only refer to the time when the Messiah will come and erect his kingdom. Jesus does not grant the request, but instead gives the thief more than he asked for: he will be united with Jesus even before the coming of the kingdom».
