The sacred Tetragrammaton in paleo-Hebrew script. /

The new fragments contain verses from Zechariah 8:16-17,
including part of the name of God written in ancient Hebrew,
and verses from Nahum 1:5-6, both from the biblical Book of the Twelve Minor Prophets.

 

 

 

 

 Experts managed to reconstruct 11 lines of text from Zechariah, including the verses,
“These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to one another, render true
and perfect justice in your gates. And do not contrive evil against one another,
and do not love perjury, because all those are things that I hate — declares the Lord.”

«[The Dead Sea Scrolls] have provided us with a unique snapshot of the literary history of Second Temple Judaism, as they are almost a millennium older than the great medieval codices on which critical editions of the Hebrew Bible were and still are based. In fact, the importance of these (remains of ) ancient Hebrew manuscripts for our reconstruction of the transmission history of the Hebrew Bible is twofold. On the one hand, they have documented the fact that the textus receptus of Rabbinic Judaism, the so-called Masoretic Text (MT), is an extremely faithful and accurately transmitted ancient textual form of the Hebrew Bible, but, on the other hand, they have also demonstrated that MT represents only one of the textual forms of the abstract entity which we commonly though anachronistically refer to as “the biblical text.” Stated somewhat differently, the scrolls have allowed us a glimpse into the variety of textual forms that once circulated among the “Judaisms” of Second Temple Judaism».

"The Dead Sea Scrolls comprise a collection of around 800 documents discovered in eleven caves in the Judean Desert beginning in 1947. These scrolls represent the library of a schismatic Jewish community that inhabited the nearby ancient settlement of Qumran from the middle of the 2nd century BCE until its destruction by the Romans in 68 CE (Schiffman 1995; Magness 2002; VanderKam and Flint 2002). The scrolls describe a community of primarily disenfranchised priests who rejected the Temple in Jerusalem as defiled and administered by corrupt priests and therefore withdrew from the center of Jewish life in Jerusalem (Schiffman 1999). This community, often identified as the Essenes from Jewish and classical sources (Vermes and Goodman 1989; Cansdale 1997; Beall 2004; see, however, Baumgarten 2004), established a sectarian settlement in Qumran, adopting the call of Isaiah 40:3, in order to “prepare the way of the Lord” (1QS 8:15). The community was led at Qumran by an individual identified only by the sobriquet “Teacher of Righteousness.” While at Qumran, the community fervently studied Scripture and other sacred works, meticulously observed Jewish law, and actively awaited the unfolding drama of the end of days, which they believed was imminent in their own time."

Αυτοί οι ρόλοι αποτελούν αντιπροσωπευτικό δείγμα της βιβλιοθήκης μιας σχισματικής ιουδαϊκής κοινότητας η οποία διέμενε στον παρακείμενο οικισμό του Κουμράν από τα μέσα του 2ου αιώνα ΠΚΧ μέχρι την καταστροφή του από τους Ρωμαίους το 68 ΚΧ. (Schiffman 1995· Magness 2002· VanderKam και Flint 2002) Οι ρόλοι εμφανίζουν μια κοινότητα κατά κύριο λόγο περιθωριοποιημένων ιερέων οι οποίοι απέρριπταν τον Ναό στην Ιερουσαλήμ ως μολυσμένο και ελεγχόμενο από διεφθαρμένους ιερείς και κατά συνέπεια απομακρυσμένη από το κέντρο της ιουδαϊκής ζωής στην Ιερουσαλήμ. (Schiffman 1999) Αυτή η κοινότητα, η οποία συνήθως ταυτίζεται με τους Εσσαίους από ιουδαϊκές και κλασικές πηγές (Vermes και Goodman 1989· Cansdale 1997· Beall 2004· βλέπε, όμως, Baumgarten 2004), ίδρυσε έναν σχισματικό οικισμό στο Κουμράν, υιοθετώντας την κλήση του Ησαΐας 40:3, ώστε να "προετοιμάσουν την οδό του Κυρίου". (1QS 8:15) Της κοινότητας ηγείτο στο Κουμράν ένα άτομο που προσδιορίζεται μόνο με το ψευδώνυμο «Δάσκαλος της Δικαιοσύνης». Όσο βρισκόταν στο Κουμράν, η κοινότητα μελετούσε ένθερμα τη Γραφή και άλλα ιερά έργα, τηρούσε σχολαστικά τον ιουδαϊκό νόμο, και ανέμενε ενεργά να εκτυλιχθεί το δράμα τού τέλους των ημερών, το οποίο πίστευαν ότι ήταν επικείμενο στον καιρό τους.]
