Comments made by Casiodoro de Reina in the section “the name Jehova” in the Introduction of his Bible translation (1569):

It is certain that with  specific and grave purpose God revealed this name to the world and wanted his servants to  know it and invoke him by it: it is a reckless thing not to use it, and a reckless superstition  not to use it under the pretext of superstition. [...]

Modern rabbis (not understanding the intent of the law) introduced to  the people the superstition that it was unlawful to pronounce the word or declare the sacred  name, ignoring the fact that (in addition to the intent of the law being clear in the case of  the blasphemer) after the institution of that law, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, Caleb, Deborah,  Gideon, Samuel, David and all the prophets and pious kings pronounced it, and finally that  it was most sweet in the mouth of all the people, who sang it in psalms and praises, as is  evident throughout the whole narrative of Sacred History.

Thus from the superstition of modern rabbis arose this law, inspired by the Devil, which on  the pretext of reverence buried in oblivion amongst the people of God His holy name by  which he wished alone to be differentiated from all the other false gods. [...]

Such evidently  were the Seventy Translators who first translated the Scriptures into Greek for King Ptolemy  of Egypt, who seem to have given force to this superstitious law and initially falsified the text  by consistently replacing Jehova with Lord, suppressing the sacred name completely on the  pretext of a superstitious truth harmful to the wellbeing of the people who were not  considered worthy to be told divine mysteries. Now consider if it is right for this superstition  to be perpetuated or whether it should cease, now God has given greater understanding; and  that Christian people know it and worship in Christ with the same name by which God  revealed Himself to the patriarchs, by which they knew Him and invoked Him; and by which  He promised by His prophets, that He would make Himself known people, so that they  would invoke Him by it. [...]

We have no wish here to take issue with anyone over this matter; nor to force anyone to  pronounce this name; if the Jewish superstition seems preferable to the sacred freedom [in  this respect] of the prophets and holy men of the Old Testament, [the reader] may omit it  when he reads, or in its place say Lord, like the Jews do, by which he may concede to us that  in translating the word we have not failed in our duty. And finally, if there is no sin in writing  or printing the name in Hebrew letters, how much less will there be in writing it in other  languages or letters. [...]

And since the same God declared his name to Moses using this  word, there is no room for any further comment.

Sebastián Castellion

Ceterum nomen יהוה [YHWH] Cabaliste veteres ita scribere soliti sunt, ut tres priores litere maiori figura, ultimum ה [He] mi nori scriberetur: ille quidem trium hypostaseon, hec vero hominis Christi indices.

Moreover, the ancient Kabbalists were accustomed to write the name יהוה [YHWH] in such a way that the first three letters were written with a larger figure, and the last ה [he] with a smaller one: the former indeed being indicators of the three Hypostases, but the latter of the man Christ. It was a rule that no one should pronounce it until he had arrived in his own house; and for that reason, they asserted that it could be pronounced only by angels and by blessed spirits. And not a few Christians, following Jewish superstition, did not dare to pronounce it. Sebastian Castellio was the first in our age to free minds from this superstition, who in his Bibles used the name Jova [i.e., a form of Jehovah] throughout. For since we are in our house, which is the Church, we are able to utter the name of God freely, seeing that He has given us His only begotten Son for redemption.

Sebastian Castellio /

To seek truth and to utter what one believes to be true can never be a crime. No one must be forced to accept a conviction. Conviction is free.

After John Calvin had Michael Servetus burned at the stake, he considered the matter ended. Servetus had denied the Trinity, a crime that Calvin could not see unpunished. After the execution, Calvin was reimbursed from the property of Servetus for his own expenses and the rest of Servetus’ money was turned over to the public treasury of Geneva.

Calvin was glad to see the matter finished. Melanchthon, Luther’s colleague, wrote that it was a deed well done. In general the matter seemed to be ended. But Calvin had not reckoned on Sebastian Castellio, a mild professor of Greek Literature in nearby Basle.
I.

The death of Servetus was defended by Calvin in a book. He called Servetus monstrous and attempted to show the dreadful harm his teachings would spread. But the damage was done. The death of Servetus, who had done nothing but disagree with Calvin’s opinions, opened discussions Calvin could not stop. In Calvin’s book he nowhere expressed the least regret at what he had done and showed loathing and contempt for Servetus as a very monster of iniquity, applying to him the foulest epithets. Seldom if ever in religious history has posthumous insult been more violent or odious, or more self-righteously used in the pretended service of God. Calvin called Servetus, among other things, detestable infidel, rabid magician, great pest, vomit, obscene dog, stupid, ferocious beast, and several others best not translated from the Latin.

Sebastian Castellio was a Professor of Greek Literature and a biblical scholar. He was born in 1515, near Geneva. At first he was friendly to Calvin and Calvin made him rector of the school system. When it was found that Castellio did not believe certain parts of the creed and that he questioned the literal accuracy of the Bible, it became prudent for him to leave Geneva.

Castellio’s reaction to the death of Servetus, whom he never knew personally, was immediate. He wrote Calvin, “If those thus butchered had been, I will not say horses, but only swine, every prince would have considered he had sustained a grave loss.” “I doubt,” he groaned, “whether in any epoch of the world’s history so much blood can have been shed as in our own.” “To seek truth and to utter what one believes to be true can never be a crime. No one must be forced to accept a conviction. Conviction is free.”
