«Googling on the Internet, one can find the following remark: “Babylonian captivity, in the history of Israel, the period from the fall of Jerusalem (586 BCE) to the reconstruction in Palestine of a new Jewish state (after 538 BCE).” Comparable remarks can be found in other dictionaries on the web and elsewhere. It is my purpose here to make clear that these data are not the hard boundaries that they have traditionally been taken for.»
