About the Hebrew designation for the Lord, these things should be said – God is named by the Hebrews with ten names. Of these, one is called Adonai, that is, ‘Lord’. Another is Ia, which was also translated into Greek as ‘Lord’. Besides these, another is the four letters which are never pronounced by the Hebrews, but which by stretching the language is called ‘Adonai’ by them and ‘Lord’ by us. And they say this was written on the gold plate that was upon the brow of the High Priest, in accordance with what was said in the Law: ‘the imprint of a signet, Holiness by the Lord, יהוה’ [Ex 28.36]. The rest of the names are these: El, Eloheim, Adon, Sabaoth, Shaddai, Iaie, [Iaie] Eserie and the three written before, of which the four letters are written with these characters: yodh, he, vov, he: יהוה: GOD.
