“On the whole, therefore, we need not hesitate to declare our conviction that the disputed words* were not written by S. John: that they were originally brought into Latin copies in Africa from the margin, where they had been placed as a pious and orthodox gloss on ver. [1Jo 5:]8: that from the Latin they crept into two or three late Greek codices, and thence into the printed Greek text, a place to which they had no rightful claim.”

«Συνοψίζοντας, λοιπόν, δεν πρέπει να διστάζουμε να διακηρύξουμε την πεποίθησή μας ότι οι αμφισβητούμενες λέξεις* δεν γράφτηκαν από τον Άγιο Ιωάννη: ότι εισάχθηκαν αρχικά στα λατινικά αντίτυπα στην Αφρική από το περιθώριο, όπου είχαν τεθεί ως ευσεβής και ορθόδοξη ερμηνευτική προσθήκη για το εδάφιο [1Ιω 5:]8: ότι από τα Λατινικά διείσδυσαν μέσα σε δυο ή τρεις πρόσφατους ελληνικούς κώδικες και από εκεί μέσα στο τυπωμένο ελληνικό κείμενο, εκεί που δεν έχουν καμία δικαιολογία για να βρίσκονται».
