Erasmus concerning the Christian and war violence

«If Christ had not openly reproved Peter, we might have regarded it as licit to defend ourselves with arms against the violence of the impious, and to repel force with force. But now that Peter has been reprehended because he drew the sword on behalf of the most innocent Lord against the impious and wicked, what cause could there be after this that a Christian man should repel injury by injury? . . . The Lord allowed the future prince of his church to fall into this error through pious affection, in order to take away the more surely and efficaciously the libidinous desire for revenge for the future, and utterly to eliminate the right of recourse to arms, after he had chided one who, not yet having received the prohibition, was getting ready to defend the pious Lord with pious affection against the impious».
